Notre Dame Cathedral

Like 20 million tourists every year, you are looking for a decent hotel near Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris because you intend to visit the forecourt of France’s most visited monument. And you’re right, this jewel of the French Capital is not to be missed under any circumstances, and by staying at the Hôtel des Marronniers, you’ll have made an excellent choice 😉

History of the Notre Dame Cathedral monument

In the heart of the Ile de la Cité near the Ile Saint-Louis, Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral dominates the city center and the banks of the Seine river. On either side, bridges link its majesty to the rest of the city and carry visitors up to its towers. Built between 1163 and 1345, it blends the characteristics of early and radiant Gothic art. 127 m long and 48 m wide, it welcomes pilgrims and heritage enthusiasts who come to admire the rose windows, relics, great organ, chandeliers and superb nave.

Two centuries of construction, but many more centuries of history. Notre-Dame Cathedral has witnessed events, tragedies and developments. In 1625, on the forecourt, a fountain was built on the instructions of Louis XIV to bring water to the inhabitants of the island. This same square, which in the 12th century was covered with houses (traces of which can be seen on the ground), was largely demolished by Baron Haussmann around 1860. A little earlier, in 1804, it was in the heart of this beautiful square that Napoleon Bonaparte was crowned Emperor of the French.

Work following the fire in 2019

On 15 April 2019, a fire destroyed part of the cathedral (nave, roof, part of the vaults) and the spire collapsed. The damage was considerable and renovation work is still underway. Since the fire, it has no longer been possible to visit the actual cathedral

However, the Crypte archéologique de l’Île de la Cité, located beneath the forecourt of Notre-Dame, is still accessible. There are archaeological remains, of course, but also models, activities for young and old, and an exhibition : Notre-Dame Cathedral from Victor Hugo to Eugène Viollet-Le-Duc. This exhibition tells us more about the major restoration work carried out on the cathedral in the 19th century.

After the visit, you will have a choice among plenty of restaurants and you can walk to the Île Saint-Louis and the famous rue Saint-Louis en l’Île in the 4th arrondissement.
